What is Quantum key Distribution ?

Quantum key distribution is a method for a secure communications using components of quantum mechanics. Recently, DRDO demonstrated communication between its two labs using the same technique. Well, how does it work and what does it do?

So using quantum key distribution method in communication makes it encrypted and any third party interference will be recognised if any illegitimate party tries to read the transmission. Well if the level of interference is of high level then communication will be aborted.
In quantum key distribution, encryption keys are send as qubits in fibre optical cable. In this system (quantum computing) qubits used as basic resource similar to as bits are used in classical computing.

So what is qubits? Qubits (quantum bits) is the basic unit of quantum information. In classical computing, information is encoded in bits where each bits can have a value of '0' or '1'. Qubits is a two level or two state quantum- mechanical system and may have the value '0' or '1' or combination of both state. The name of this phenomenon is superposition.

In quantum communications, qubit use to be encoded on photon and this technique is called time bin coding.
